Pilgrim Pond

-->
PILGRIM POND

By Kathleen Williams

It’s about coming to the New World. Leaving behind all that is familiar. All those you love. On a gamble, or a whim, or a principle that just won’t leave you alone.

It’s about leaving your orbit. Becoming the free radical. The weightless particle careening through space and time. Looking for a new life-supporting galaxy that welcomes strangers – that welcomes you.

And when you go to bed hungry every night, or you see the vegetable garden fail, that was to carry you through the winter. When your colleagues, friends, and loved ones become ill, with no way to help them. When a cut finger becomes a life-threatening concern, and you ask yourself…did I really need to come this far to practice my religion, or my art, or to live with the sense of freedom that I couldn’t find anywhere else – and the answer is yes.

Always yes.
