When She Was Young

When She Was Young
by Judith Camann

She called for her cat nine days after I returned from the vet’s
empty-handed.  She slapped the air
as the tiny wail of the mosquito encroached  her world; the sun’s glare
concealed  her from the girl
I once knew.  Soft teal eyes
now radiate  across the room the pierce of a stranger.
From her meteoric outburst
I recall the girl who dressed a kitten in bows and tutus
sharing her pillow to sleep aside a gentle purr.

I really don’t feel like a family member anymore.  Ill be gone don’t worry.

I look so much better when I smile
